Douro
Alto Douro Wine Region
The Douro Demarcated Region extends over 250 000 hectares (617 000 acres) along the hydrographic basin of the Douro River, a powerful river that runs 927 km (576 mi) from the source in the Picos de Urbión, in Spain, to the city of Porto. In between it crosses several wine regions, the most impressive being the Douro Demarcated Region with its steep valleys and narrow, wild canyons.
The soils are almost entirely derived from shale, with a surrounding geological formation of a granitic nature.
The region is characterized by very cold winters and very hot and dry summers.
It was demarcated in 1756 in order to promote the quality of its wines, being considered the first demarcated region in the world!
The Alto Douro Wine Region is a particularly representative area of the landscape that characterizes the vast Douro Demarcated Region, the oldest regulated wine-growing region in the world. It encompasses an area of more than 26 thousand hectares (64 000 acres) extending along the valley of the Douro River and its tributaries, surrounded by mountains and endowed with very particular physical and climatic characteristics. It was inscribed in 2001, during the 25th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, on the World Heritage List.

Douro Superior
The Douro, a world heritage site, is a region with many faces, many styles and different identities. Few regions in the world have the privilege of boasting so much diversity, both natural and human. Few appellations manage to oppose modern and deeply technological wines compared to wines as viscerally classic and rustic in style, as the Douro can also present. Few regions are able to assert themselves in the world of fortified wines with international icons such as Port Wine, while continuing to surprise the world with the new generation of Douro wines.
In addition to an absolutely indescribable natural beauty, which man has mastered and cultivated to measure, the Douro is one of the most blessed national regions in the richness of indigenous grape varieties, an abundance multiplied by the diversity of exhibitions, altitudes, climates, water lines and a huge heritage of old vineyards, which poverty combined with the wisdom of man allowed to maintain.
Among the high-altitude vineyards, plateaus and rugged scenery, we discovered the Douro Superior.
Quinta do Vale Meão e Museu do Côa
Leaving Porto towards east, we will take you to discover one of the most emblematic properties of the richest World Heritage of the Douro: Quinta do Vale Meão.
There are 300 hectares (740 acres) of land installed on a peninsula embraced by the river, which offers unique landscapes and a geological variety that gives originality to the wines produced there, from lowland and mountain vineyards, planted in shale and granite soils.
Here in the Douro Superior the soils are poorer, production is lower, but they result in better wines and history proves it.
Come and delight yourself with excellent wines and breathtaking landscapes!
We will have a tasting of 5 excellent wines waiting for you, produced in this piece of paradise, accompanied by history and, above all, the hospitality so characteristic of the region.
Nearby, another world heritage site awaits us to discover, the rock art of the Côa Valley.
We have lunch for you at the Restaurant Côa Museu, which offers a tasting of the rich regional cuisine accompanied by wines from the Douro Superior.
Located in the magnificent scenic surroundings of Foz do Côa (Côa river mouth) on a large terrace overlooking the Douro Wine Region, at the table of the Côa Museu Restaurant, local products are the stars of the menu.
And it will be at the Côa Museum, embedded on the top of the mountain where the Côa River meets the Douro, which will begin the visit to the Foz Côa Archaeological Park, created with the aim of preserving prehistoric findings.
In the exhibition halls, there are traces and replicas of some of the rocks engravings in the Côa Valley and elsewhere in Europe. It is the world’s largest collection of Paleolithic outdoor art.
Inaugurated in 2010, the idea of the building includes the idea that “Paleolithic art in the Côa Valley is perhaps the first manifestation of
’Land art ’”.
The Côa Museum celebrates the meeting of the two world heritage sites in the region: The Prehistoric Art of the Côa Valley and the Douro Wine Landscape.
At your disposal, there will be a day of excellence, quiet, rich in traditions, flavors and culture, which characterizes the Douro Superior!
Núcleo de Arte Rupestre do Vale do Côa e Quinta de Ervamoira
In the Foz Côa region, sub-region of the Douro Superior, the arid climate contrasts with the green slopes of Ervamoira vines.

A visit to Ervamoira is also the opportunity to taste Ramos Pinto wines and have lunch on the terrace of the Quinta’s restaurant, in the heart of the mountain.
The Museu de Sítio de Ervamoira concentrates much of the research produced on the Côa Valley.
